itsu's answer

What does itsu say about halal?

itsu's FAQ says: "Unfortunately, our meat products are not halal certified. Our sushi rice contains rice wine vinegar & our miso soup contains low levels of alcohol, so any products including those ingredients are also not halal."

That wording has been on itsu's FAQ since at least November 2022, when it read almost the same. In 2015 itsu's official X account also told a customer that "Itsu chicken is not halal."

Chicken

Is itsu chicken halal?

No. itsu's chicken is covered by its statement that its meat products are not halal certified.

The chicken teriyaki rice bowl, for example, lists chargrilled chicken thigh with no halal claim. Its teriyaki sauce also contains mirin and sake. See itsu rice bowls.

Pork

Does itsu serve pork?

Yes. Three breakfast items contain pork, and itsu's supermarket range includes a pork gyoza.

The supermarket range includes sizzling pork gyoza. See the itsu breakfast menu and itsu gyoza and dumplings.

Alcohol

Does itsu food contain alcohol?

Some dishes contain small amounts. itsu says its sushi rice is cooked with sushi vinegar, its herb dressing has traces of alcohol, its teriyaki sauce contains mirin, and its miso soups have a very low alcohol content.

itsu's menu also lists Asahi beer. Its allergen note says different ingredients are handled in open plan kitchens, so it cannot guarantee any dish is free from any ingredient.

What to choose

What can you eat at itsu if you only eat halal?

On itsu's own wording, only dishes with no meat, no sushi rice and no miso avoid the problem ingredients. Even then, itsu certifies nothing as halal.

Vegetable gyoza, edamame and many snacks contain no meat, but check the full ingredients on each dish, for example itsu lists alcohol in the soy sauce it uses. The itsu vegan menu lists every item itsu labels vegan.

This page reports what itsu publishes. It is not a religious ruling. If halal matters to you, ask itsu directly or check each dish's ingredients.
Supermarket

Are itsu supermarket products halal?

itsu's FAQ answer is about its restaurants. We found no itsu statement on the halal status of its grocery range, so check each pack.

See itsu supermarket products.
